The River (2012)
Piece for Clarinet doubling Bass Clarinet, Violin and Piano.
Recorded by Gemini during a workshop in the University of Bristol.
The River is a work written for Clarinet in Bb doubling Bass Clarinet in Bb, Violin and Piano. The basis of this piece is built from two collections of notes, which create the basic structure of the four main themes of the piece.
The piece is entitled The River as I wrote the majority of the work over the Christmas break, near the River Llwchwr and the Loughor Estuary.
I wanted to explore various ways to compose for this ensemble, through dialogues between the parts (the canon at bar 31 between the Violin and Clarinet and at bar 48 between all three instruments are examples of this), the various textures the ensemble could create and also the various moods and emotions they could evoke.
